3. The issue of sexual orientation

The government has not done much to support discrimination of sexual orientation. A majority of Americans favor some form of legal recognition for same-sex couples, only four states and the District of Columbia have legally recognized same-sex marriage and another five recognize civil unions. It is pretty much up to the state to decide whether to allow same-sex marriage and their to decision whether to recognize it or not. Barack Obama opposes federal recognition of same-sex marriage, yet Republican former Vice President Dick Cheney supports it. The legality of same-sex marriage legality may increase over time, due to most younger people accept same-sex marriages.

  1. I completely agree that the government has not done enough to protect and preserve the rights of those with sexual orientations other than heterosexual. It simply is not right or fair for ANY two adults to not have the freedom to marry if they so choose. It is simply not a matter that affects anyone else, much less causes any harm. Sexual orientation should not matter in any arena, whether at work or at home. No one is supposed to publically express sexuality, regardless of orientation. The rules and expectations should be equal to all.

  2. I think you are right about the fact that more and more states will recognize same-sex marriages in the future. It seems like with all of these issues, they become more accepted with time. Like in the Civil War era, most people in the south were for slavery and did not see themselves on the same level as blacks. Fast forward to today and as I look around myself here at school there are people from a lot of different races in the same classroom and it isn't seen as something strange. I see the same situation eventually playing out with same-sex marriages.

  3. I think that you are right about more states legalizing same-sex marriages in the future. I don’t think that all the states will accept it all at once but I do believe that most of the younger population accepts it more than the older population does. It’s something that the younger population is used to I think and it just wasn’t that common during the older population’s days. They younger population is used to seeing and experiencing same-sex couples.

  4. I agree with you in the fact that more states will be legalizing same-sex marriages. I think that the younger generation coming up is more accepting of same-sex marriage because it exists openly in their society and it's an issue that is becoming more and more accepted. As the younger generation takes office, I think that the states will accept the idea and more and more states will legalize same-sex marriages.
